‘Venom’ Releases First Official Image

Sony Pictures has released the first official image from the upcoming ‘Venom‘ spin-off. The film, which stars Tom Hardy and is directed by Ruben Fleischeris set to be the first of what Sony hopes will be a series of films set in the Spider-Man universe featuring side characters such as Venom. This film in particular has been in development since his appearance in ‘Spider-Man 3’, having multiple directors attached to the project before Fleischer, most notably when Alex Kurtman was writing the film to be a stand alone piece. After the The Amazing Spider-Man 3 never came to fruition, and Sony came to a deal with Marvel to share the character, Fleischer’s film was fast-tracked for it’s current release date.

Since the announcement of the film, the look of Venom himself are being kept under tight wraps, as the character is set to be brought to life using motion capture techniques. In addition to the new image, we also learned from a recent announcement (below). As it turns out, the film will take place in San Francisco, and will be influenced by two major storylines from the books: ‘Planet of the Symbiotes‘ and ‘Lethal Protector‘. The image itself showcases Hardy reporting, nothing too groundbreaking here. But I will say that the actor has rarely been miscast, and even if I have problems with a slightly older and more experienced Eddie Brock in an origin story. I think that Hardy seems to fit the part well in this initial image.

Venom is currently set to hit theaters on October 5, 2018, and stars Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, and Jenny Slate in addition to Hardy. Here’s the official image (via IGN), along with the video clip form Brazil Comic-Con where Fletcher makes the announcements:
