Two-Disc ‘Static Shock: The Complete Third Season’ Coming to DVD

The DC animated series Static Shock which ran from 2000-2004, is having its third season come to DVD from Warner Archive Collection. The third season saw Virgil Hawkins aka Static Shock and sometimes “Static” (voiced by Phil LaMarr) receive a new costume and also a crime-fighting partner Richie aka Gear. Also in that third season, Static would visit Africa as well as Gotham City, pairing him up with members of the Justice League such as Batman and Superman.

Though it does not look like the two-disc DVD will include any bonus features, bummer, it will have all thirteen episodes from the third season. The episode list goes as followed:

Disc One
“Hard As Nails”
“Gear”
“Static in Africa”
“Shebang”
“The Usual Suspect”
“A League Of Their Own, Part 1”
“A League Of Their Own, Part 2”
“Showtime”
“Romeo in the Mix”

Disc Two
“Toys In The Hood”
“The Parent Trap”
“Flashback”
“Blast From The Past”

Voice actor Phil LaMarr who is known throughout the DC Animated Universe for lending his voice to several characters including Green Lantern, Aquaman, Brainiac (the list goes on), had this to say about the third season and working on the series:

“The writing was just as good as ever, but they really raised the stakes. Static’s costume went from homemade to a legitimate super hero costume, Richie became his own super hero in Gear, and that meant there was less sitting back at headquarters – we started going on a lot more duo-action adventures.”

“As a comic book guy, Static was a dream come true – a character who really felt real to me. I always thought Static would be what I would be if I got powers as a teenager. I loved Spidey and Bats, but I never wanted to be them. They’re tortured souls, and everything they do is informed by that guilt. For Static, the worst problem was having to do homework.”

“Moreover, it was so great to finally have a black super hero who didn’t have ‘black’ in his name. I could relate to him. Here’s a kid who is smart, who’s trying to do the right thing, dealing with relatable problems whether it was family or school or friendships. Despite that fact that it was a cartoon that revolved around super heroes, it felt real to me.”

Static Shock: The Complete Third Season arrives on DVD January 30.
