New ‘Black Panther’ Clip, TV Spot, & Featurette Showcase T’Challa’s Powers, Wakanda

The hype train for Marvel Studios’ Black Panther has officially left the station. Currently barreling toward it’s February 16th release date, Marvel has released a new clip, TV spot, and featurette that highlight both T’Challa’s powers, and the fictional nation of Wakanda in the film. The movie itself follows T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) as he returns to the throne of Wakanda, where he attempts to unite the warring factions of the secretive nation-state, while at the same time defending the nation from would-be king Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan). All of the marketing material thus far seems to suggest that Black Panther will be one of the most ambitious Marvel movies yet, at least in terms of visual design and world creation. We’ve seen a few glimpses of new footage from the film in the past few weeks, but these give us our best look yet in terms of new footage. Check out the clips below:

“Kinetic Energy” Clip

The shot at the end of this clip is one that has pretty much been the “money shot” in pretty much every piece of marketing material thus far, but now that we have some context, I can see why. The moment in question surely happens in what is probably the culmination of the first act in the story, but it’s a pretty badass moment nonetheless. We get a few quick glimpses of princess Shuri’s (Letitia Wright) workshop, as well as the dynamic between Boseman and Wright in the ensuing scene. Their relationship should be one of the more interesting character dynamics in the story.

“War” TV Spot

This TV Spot is comprised of mostly new footage including a few great looks at the “Golden Jaguar” suit that Killmonger eventually gets his hands on in the film. In addition, we get a great look at the many colors of Wakanda, as well as some quick glimpses at the variety of locations that we’re sure to see in the film, not to mention the amazing costume design by Ruth E. Carter that’s not given enough time in these short clips.

“Wakanda Revealed” Featurette

Finally, this featurette does a great job of giving us our first good look at why Wakanda is the best kept secret in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Along with giving some insight into the geopolitical climate that T’Challa returns home to after ‘Civil War’, it feels like there’s a great amount of density to this world. The fact that it correlates directly to the plot of the film makes the details in the world of Wakanda feel absolutely essential to Ryan Coogler‘s epic. In addition to Boseman and Jordan, Black Panther stars Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, with Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis. Here’s the official synopsis:

Marvel Studios’ Black Panther follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, the King of Wakanda, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king. But when a powerful old enemy reappears, T’Challa’s mettle as king—and Black Panther—is tested when he is drawn into a formidable conflict that puts the fate of Wakanda and the entire world at risk. Faced with treachery and danger, the young king must rally his allies and release the full power of Black Panther to defeat his foes and secure the safety of his people and their way of life.
