‘Mute’ Finally Gets A Trailer!

Netflix has finally released the trailer for Duncan Jones‘ upcoming sic-fi epic, ‘Mute‘. Although the film is set to be released in a little over a month, the film has long been in the works for the director, roughly 12 years or so. The film stars Alexander Skarsgård as Leo, a mute who searches for his missing girlfriend in a futuristic Berlin. The long in the making film was originally intended to be made before the director’s under-seen debut, ‘Moon‘, but was continually pushed back in favor of making more accessible genre faire such as ‘Source Code‘ and the abysmal ‘Warcraft‘. Finally, Netflix decided to green light the project, much to Jones’ excitement.

Netflix, these crazy new kids on the block, had this totally crazy philosophy on film making straight out of the 70s. Don’t make 4 quad “please everyone” homogenous blobs! Make films fimmakers are passionate about & let the audience find them!”I’ve been working towards making Mute for 12 years now. I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that we’re finally going to shoot this utterly unique film…The fact that I get to make it with Alexander Skarsgard and Paul Rudd makes it all the more exciting! Mute is a film that will last. It is unlike any other science fiction being made today.

So after the long road to the screen to ‘Mute‘, we only have to wait a few more weeks to see what all of the fuss is about. Indeed, it is great to be getting a new and original sic-fi story coming so soon, but I’m also so skeptical at the same time. Why, you ask? Well, for such a high-profile movie that features well-known names such as Skarsgård, Paul Rudd, and Justin Theroux, it seems odd that Netflix would wait so long to release this trailer. Either way you shake it, ‘Mute‘ will be an interesting experiment for Netflix, whether it’s a good film is another story altogether. My hopes remain high, especially when you consider the great cast that comes with ‘Mute‘,  but time will ultimately tell.

Here’s the official trailer for the film, along with the synopsis below. ‘Mute‘ arrives Netflix on February 23, 2018.

Berlin, the future, but close enough to feel familiar: In this loud, often brutal city, Leo (Alexander Skarsgård) – unable to speak from a childhood accident – searches for his missing girlfriend, the love of his life, his salvation, through dark streets, frenzied plazas, and the full spectrum of the cities shadow-dwellers. As he seeks answers, Leo finds himself mixed up with Cactus Bill (Paul Rudd) and Duck (Justin Theroux), a pair of irreverent US army surgeons on a mission all their own. This soulful sci-fi journey from filmmaker Duncan Jones (Moon, Source CodeWarcraft) imagines a world of strange currencies in which echoes of love and humanity are still worth listening to.
