With an opening of an estimated $23 million, Maze Runner: The Death Cure has overthrown Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle for the top spot at the weekend box office. Death Cure opened last week in foreign markets, earning $62 million. So far the film has brought in $105 million against a reported budgetet of $62. The film will certainly turn a profit for FOX (now Disney), but won’t scorch the box office like other YA franchises.
Speaking of fire setting YA franchises, Jumanji just surpassed The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 to become the 46th highest grossing domestic film of all time. Adding the $16 million the film made this weekend, Jumanji has now earned $338 million domestically and $822 million worldwide. Expect many sequels to follow.
After expanding to 2,800 theaters, Scott Coopers’ Hostiles came in third this weekend earning an estimated $10.2 million. Finishing right behind Hostiles was the Hugh Jackman musical The Greatest Showman. The film finished fourth with an estimated $9.5 million. Currently the film sits at $126 million domestically, and $259 million worldwide.
Rounding out the top five weekend box office earners was Steven Spielberg’s uninspired The Post. The Best Picture nominee brought in another $8.8 million for a domestic total of $58.5 million. We’ll see if the Oscar buzz can keep The Post in the top five next weekend.
