6 ‘Justice League’ Clips Reveal Steppenwolf

Warner Bros. have release seven clips from ‘Justice League‘. In the film, Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) look to assemble a team of metahumans that includes The Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Mamoa) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) to fight a cosmic threat.

Now that ‘Justice League’ is nearly within reach, the the film’s final marketing push is in full effect. Just a few days ago, we got our first good look at many of the supporting players in a barrage of new images from the film. Although we didn’t really expect to see the return of Henry Cavill‘s Superman in the images or any of the trailers, the film’s main villain, Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds) has also been noticeably absent from the marketing. Well, now one of the clips has given us our first look at Steppenwolf, and it is…interesting. But more on that below.

Justice League‘ also stars Amber Heard as Mera, Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta , Diane Lane as Martha Kent, J.K. Simmons as Comissioner Gordon, Joe Morton as Dr. Silas Stone and Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Set to be released on November 17, 2017, The film was directed by Zack Snyder. Here’s the official synopsis for the film, along with my commentary on all 6 clips below:

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

“Batman & Aquaman Meet”

Clearly early in the film, this scene is one that was shot very early into the production of ‘Justice League‘, since this the first scene to be shown to the public at San Diego Comic-Con over two years ago. The scene is surely interesting, and seems to set up a good dynamic between Aquaman and Batman that hopefully will have a great payoff later in the film.

“Batman & The Flash”

Another scene that has been heavily used in the trailers, and rightfully so. This scene is another that seems to be fairly well executed, introducing us to The Flash in a nice succinct and fun way. Ezra Miller’s Flash seems to be the highlight of the film, and this clip proves that to be no different.

“Wonder Woman Rescue”

[su_youtube url=”https://youtu.be/PpxlqTx7DTg”]

In what is surely another scene form early in the film features Wonder Woman doing her crime-stopping thing. It’s not that this scene is bad in particular, it’s that it’s extremely vanilla. It’s nearly an exact copy of what we saw in ‘Wonder Woman‘, mixed with Snyder’s heavy use of his signature speed-ramping. Put simply, its a very boring way to introduce a very complex character.

Gordon Meets the League

[su_youtube url=”https://youtu.be/FGCsLwPMeKQ”]

This one is interesting. On one hand, the tone in this clip feels extremely muddled, bobbling back and forth between the comedy of Flash, and the more serious nature of the other characters. On the other, part of me feels that this problem will be come less and less prevalent on a scene-to-scene basis. Hopefully I’m right.

“Save One”

[su_youtube url=”https://youtu.be/3Mgp4AvZPHY”]

In what is probably my favorite of the batch, this clip not only shows us the different take on Batman this time around, but it also plays up The Flash’s reluctance to join the fight. I think they are two very interesting arcs for both of these characters. With Batman taking a more mentor-like role in the film, it should prove to create interesting scenes with actual heart. Ultimately this scene makes me like these characters more than any of the other clips.

“Primitive Beings”

[su_youtube url=”https://youtu.be/DBzRV9Tk1VU”]

Finally… Steppenwolf. I’m assuming that this is the first time that the team encounters Steppenwolf in the film, but I have to say– this clip is awful, and it’s vanilla scenes like this one and the Wonder Woman scene previously mentioned that have me slightly worried about the second half of ‘Justice League‘. The action is boring, Steppenwolf is neither imposing or threatening, and the effects feel plastic-y at times. Although this clip does a good job of showing the team in action, it does feel problematic that such a lackluster scene is the best they could come up with to promote the film. Hopefully I’m wrong, and the effects look much more convincing on the big screen.
