Box Office Roundup: Tyler Perry Strikes Again

In an especially terrible weekend in the land of Hollywood, one release MUST rise above the rest.  It’s a weekend in which three of the new wide-releases barely crack the double digit mark on Rotten TomatoesGeostorm is sitting comfortably with a solid 13% fresh.  The Snowman sits at the single digit mark of 9 % fresh.  Say what you will about the Rotten Tomatoes system and how it represents the films, but it’s some sort of indication on the general consensus of the movie.  Fortunately for some, Rotten Tomatoes plays no role on its box office success, and the proof is in the Perry.

Despite sitting at 8%, Tyler Perry is back at number one with his new film Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween.  Perry has another hit on his hands as his new Medea movie brought in an estimated $21 million in its opening weekend at the box office.

Warner Brothers sunk more than $120 million into the new disaster movie Geostorm, and results were.. well, a disaster.  Things are looking stormy for the film which opened with an estimated $13 million.

Last weeks box office champion Happy Death Day slipped to the third spot with an estimated $9 million, bringing its total to around $40 million domestically.  The Blumhouse flick has already turned a profit as it heads into Halloween weekend.

Blade Runner 2049 came in fourth in its third weekend, adding an estimated $7 million.  Blade Runner is doing strong overseas, as the once seen “box office bomb” could turn a profit as it chips away at earning back its reported $150 budget.  As film fans we can only hope.

Rounding out the top five is Only the Brave, which brought in an estimated $6 million.  Only the Brave is the best reviewed movie that opened this weekend, currently sitting at 90% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
