(AOTN) Two time Oscar winner Sean Penn has signed on for his first major TV role. Penn will play the male lead in a series called the The First. Beau Willimon’s creator of House of Cards is developing the series which is set to premiere on Hulu sometime in 2018.
The First will follow the first humans to Mars, and the struggles they must through in taking the first steps to colonizing the planet. The show will not only focus on the astronauts, but also focus on the family and friends that are still back home on Earth.
Details of Penn’s role for the show have not been revealed, but the award winning actor is sure to bring a depth to whatever character he is playing. The First will go in production later this year. Willimon’s will serve as executive produce the show along with producing partner Jordan Tappis.
Hulu has been on a roll as of late with an Emmy win for The Handmaid’s Tale. Hulu has several prominent shows on the horizon, and The First sounds like an interesting feel for the streaming service that is putting itself out to be a competitive brand.
