It’s Official! J.J. Abrams Will Return To Direct ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’

(AOTN) After much speculation and a ton of shifting Disney has officially confirmed that director J.J. Abrams will be returning to the ‘Star Wars film franchise and is set to direct ‘Star Wars: Episode IX‘.  Abrams will direct, as well as, co-write the film with Chris Terrio.

Disney and Lucasfilm were left in a tizzy after it was revealed that previously announced director Colin Trevorrow had left the project, and his replacement choice Rian Johnson also decided to turn down the offer and walk away from the film. It is a no brainer that Disney and Lucasfilm would immediately run towards JJ Abrams, who took the helm on “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” which ended up grossing a whopping $2.6 billion dollars worldwide and once again skyrocketed the Star Wars brand into current pop culture.

That is not saying that ‘Star Wars’ has not always been a pop culture phenomena, but Abrams film definitely introduced ‘Star Wars’ to an entirely new generation, while pleasing the die-hard fans as well. It was an amazing success, so we are stoked to see just what he will do with ‘Episode IX’!

Below you can find the press release that was posted on StarWars.com confirming J.J. Abrams as director:

J.J. Abrams, who launched a new era of Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, is returning to complete the sequel trilogy as writer and director of Star Wars: Episode IX. Abrams will co-write the film with Chris Terrio. Star Wars: Episode IX will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Michelle Rejwan, Abrams, Bad Robot, and Lucasfilm.

“With The Force Awakens, J.J. delivered everything we could have possibly hoped for, and I am so excited that he is coming back to close out this trilogy,” said Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy.
