Alex Garland is taking on writing and directing his first film since the master piece of what is known as Ex Machina. Like Ex Machina, this next film is also based off of pre-existing literature. Based off the best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer, Annihilation stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Oscar Isaac, Tessa Thompson and Gina Rodriguez.

Does it have sentient life? Check.
Lab studies? Check.
Venturing out into unknown territory? Check.
Mystery? Check.
A crew of people being hunted down? Check.
Fear and suspense? It sure does look like it.
Not that this is a must in sci-fi but: A great cast? Check!
These are all things that we love about sci-fi films and just in the teaser alone, it looks like it has a whole lot of potential to be a great film. Yes, we have seen this kind of thing before in other sci-fi films and the pay off wasn’t so great but if Alex Garland goes about this film just as he did in his directorial debut, this can start building up the director’s legacy.
