Batman Will Be More Traditional In ‘Justice League’

The road to ‘Justice League‘ has been a bit rocky to say to least. After many reported production shake-ups that culminated with Joss Whedon replacing Zack Snyder as director, the ‘Justice League has had it’s fair share of problems. Ever since the superhero team-up was announced after years of development and several failed attempts, many began to speculate if the film was too rushed, despite the decades-long development period.

Despite this, one aspect of the DCEU that has retained high praise has been the casting of Ben Aflleck as Batman. We got our first look at Affleck’s take on the character in ‘Batman v. Superman :Dawn of Justice‘, as well as a couple small scenes in ‘Suicide Squad‘.

The overall praise for Affleck’s portrayal has been strong, but many (including myself) have had problems with certain aspects of Batman that were changed for those movies. Luckily, in a recent interview with EW, Affleck confirmed that the character would be portrayed differently this time around, returning to his roots. When we first saw the trailer for ‘Justice League‘, many of the problems of Dawn of Justice seemed to be mended, but this is good news for people who wanted a more optimistic Batman this time around.

Here’s how Affleck addressed this change in the upcoming film, based on what happened in Dawn of Justice:

“[BvS] departed a little bit from the traditional Batman. He started out with all this rage directed at Superman, because of his coworkers who had died in the fight Superman had with Zod. He was holding on to a lot of anger, in a little bit of an irrational way.”

Elaborating, Affleck explained that,

“This is a much more traditional Batman. He’s heroic. He does things in his own way, but he wants to save people, help people … This is more in keeping with the canon of how Batman’s usually been portrayed, and how he’s portrayed vis a vis the Justice League in the comics. This is more the Batman you would find if you opened up your average Batman comic book … not that it’s average. I think it’s a really cool story.”

When asked about how these ideas incorporate themselves into “Justice League“, Affleck responded:

“He’s put in this position of having to reach out, find other people, convincing them to do something. Part of the drama of the movie is the question of whether or not the team is going to come together. It’s very different from the tenor of the last movie … Actually, it’s sort of a story about multilateralism. It’s not a bad theme to have!”

So the plot thickens. ‘Justice League‘ is set for release on November 17, 2017.
