Ben Affleck Will Not Direct ‘The Batman’

(AOTN) There has been much speculation on just what actor Ben Affleck would bring to the table when it was revealed that he had signed on to direct the upcoming Warner Bros. film “The Batman”. If his work on the disappointing “Live By The Night’ was any indication, we can see why some red flags would be raised.

Variety has just revealed the news that Affleck has decided to step down as director of “The Batman” however he does still plan to both produce and star in the upcoming film. Even earlier this month, Affleck was still attached as the director for the film and they were still working on perfecting the script.

“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions,” Affleck said in a statement. “Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

The decision is said to be based upon what is best for the upcoming film and has nothing to do with any of Affleck’s recent projects. Rumor has it that both Affleck and the Warner Bros. executives had not been able to reach an agreement on the script for several weeks now.

In their statement Warner Bros. said, “Warner Bros. fully supports Ben Affleck’s decision and remains committed to working with him to bring a standalone Batman picture to life.”

Now the question remains as to who will sign on to direct “The Batman”. The studio definitely has a few directors in mind and are said to be actively setting up meetings to see who will be the best fit for the project. We should expect an announcement sometime in the near future.

Batman is such an iconic and important character for so many fans, we are just happy to hear that the project has not completely tanked.
