With the success (meh?) of Suicide Squad this past weekend, the hype over the new characters begins. This Halloween will undoubtedly be flooded with “Daddy’s lil Monster” t-shirts and multi-colored booty shorts, but how do you keep a fan-base interested long term? Gotham‘s Executive Producers have stated that the show will feature early versions of characters like Killer Croc and Harley Quinn. The show is already known for doing this with characters like Jerome, (who’s supposedly the Joker) and obviously Bruce Wayne, who becomes Batman at some point.
Executive Producer Ken Woodruff explained a little more by saying that, “The Indian Hill that exists in Gotham, that’s the bridge to these villains like Killer Croc and Solomon Grundy.” Indian Hill, for those who don’t know, is a research facility that sits underneath Arkham Asylum in the show. It’s a lab and testing facility to create monsters like the aforementioned villains. Nothing was specifically mentioned about Harley’s beginnings but I would bet that the more we learn about Jerome, Harley will come up naturally.
Considering the DC Television Universe and the DCEU (Extended & Cinematic Universe) do not exist together in harmony, you’re more than likely not going to see Margot Robbie and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje reprising their roles. I would normally condemn this – giving fans too many of the same character that they have to keep up with, but considering I was pretty apathetic about DCEU’s representation of Harley & Croc, perhaps this is their chance to do it right. (But I wouldn’t count on it.)
Gotham returns this September on Fox.
