The Thunderbirds are back with Amazon Prime’s all-new Thunderbirds Are Go. Gone are the the creepy marionettes that would give me nightmares, here are the new and improved creepy characters. The team is back and more vibrant than ever but will Thunderbirds Are Go soar higher than its predecessor?
With this all-new Thunderbirds Are Go, Amazon Prime aims not only to have this series make an impression on children, but also give the older generation that enjoyed the first series, some nostalgia.When I was younger, I remember catching a few episodes of Thunderbirds (they were reruns of course) and I can’t really recall any specifics of any of the episodes. Thunderbirds only lasted two seasons but it became a classic and well known mainly because it was one of the first of its kind. Not many shows used electronic marionettes back then but whether good or bad, it left an impression for many children.
What surprised me about this new series is that the first episode was a two-part episode, which was about 47 minutes long (the other episodes in the series are just over 20 mins. long). A 47 minute episode for an animated series is very rare and that’s because of the time it takes to make these animated shows and well, because children just do not have that long of an attention span. The episode was nothing but action and that’s completely okay.
As for the animation, it was really good. All the original Thunderbirds characters are back and animated in a slightly similar marionette style (far less creepy looking than the original characters were). I think this was a great move by Amazon. When the camera was zoomed in, you can see all the textures in things like the leather seats the characters were sitting on, details on the ships, etc.
I can definitely see Thunderbirds Are Go lasting longer than the original Thunderbirds did. If it will be a classic like the original? Well, only time will tell.
I give Thunderbirds Are Go 3 out of 5.
