‘Justice League vs Teen Titans’ Blu-ray Limited Edition Combo Pack Review

Warner Bros. Animation’s latest film for the DC Universe is Justice League vs Teen Titans. Now with a title like that, you expect it to be an all out war between the two biggest teams in the DC Universe. Let me tell you what we got instead.

How these two teams face off is actually a good plot point. When the Justice League realize that Trigon is the father of Raven and that he is seeking her, they wanted to keep her in their custody so that they can keep her and the rest of the planet safe. Teen Titans, led by Starfire, will not allow the Justice League to take her. During that debate, Trigon’s army take over the minds and bodies of the Justice League. This battle only lasts a few minutes and they don’t fight at all again in the film. So much for the versus, right?

The story is really about Damian becoming a new member of the Teen Titans, and Raven’s origin as well as her feud with her father, Trigon. I understand that “Robin and Raven” wouldn’t have been as appealing as “Justice League vs Teen Titans”, but at least it would make more sense. Both Raven’s and Damian’s stories are pretty good for the most part. The origin of Raven is the New 52 version and Damian becoming the new Robin of the Teen Titans makes a lot of sense. There is a questionable scene where the Titans show Damian what fun is by going to a carnival. During that scene, Damian attempts to go up against Beast Boy at…a Dance Dance Revolution challenge!…Yeah…kind of uncharacteristic of Damian to want to dance in front of a whole crowd at a carnival. And that scene lasts longer than the fight between the Justice League and Teen Titans.

What the animated movie does a good job at is the ending and the reason Raven has the Chakra gem (diamond) on her forehead. It makes a lot of sense and I think it adds even more character to Raven. Also a cool thing that Warner Bros. Animation does is tease at Cyborg teaming up with the Teen Titans throughout the film.Though most of us are used to seeing Cyborg as a Titan in the animated series, in the New 52 version of Justice League, Cyborg is a founding member of the JL. Seeing Starfire as an adult and the new leader of Teen Titans was different but it didn’t hurt the film at all. It made it even more interesting.

The voice acting is really good but there was one voice that quite didn’t match up for me and that voice was Raven, played by Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story). Farmiga had the monotone voice of Raven down but it was just too soft to where it almost didn’t add any personality to Raven. The times when Raven would use her magic, her voice wasn’t as powerful sounding as you would expect it to be.

If I were to rate the movie itself, I would give it a 2.5 out of 5. With the title of the movie being what it was, you would assume you would see more than just a seven minute fight between the two teams. What I did like was that Raven’s origin story was a key part of the plot. I really hope that this film launches some more Teen Titans animated films.

(Shown on the left). The Damian figure stands at  3.5 inches. As for the actual special features, there are three featurettes: Growing Up Titan, Heroes and Villains: Raven, Heroes and Villains: Trigon, two bonus cartoons from the DC Vault and a sneak peek at DC Universe’s next animated film, Batman: The Killing Joke. The featurettes talk about the history of the characters from the origins to the New 52. Just these three featurettes are well over thirty minutes in length. The DVD only includes the sneak peek of Batman: The Killing Joke and trailers for upcoming films.

The two bonus cartoons from the DC Vault are an episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold and an episode of Teen Titans. These episodes are about twenty-two minutes long.

The sneak peek of Batman: The Killing Joke was effing awesome! You get to hear from the writers and cast, and you get to see a lot of footage of the upcoming animated film. I really can’t wait for it.

I was very satisfied with all the features included with the Blu-ray combo pack. DC Comics always hit the mark when it comes to special features.

Packaging

For the limited edition Blu-ray combo pack comes in a numbered box that holds the Blu-ray case and the Damian figure. In the Blu-ray case comes the Blu-ray, DVD and digital HD code for Ultraviolet.

Verdict

Justice League vs Teen Titans had some pros and cons. It wasn’t a bad film but it wasn’t perfect either. The bonus features really made up for where the film lacked and were perfect for an in-home release like this.

I give Justice League vs Teen Titans Blu-ray Limited Edition Combo Pack 7 out of 10.
