Box Office Roundup: Jungle Book Remains King

The Jungle Book dropped only 41.1% percent in its second weekend at the box office, earning an estimated $60.8 million.  The second weekend proved lucrative once again for the Jon Favreau directed Disney film which now sits at $191 million domestic and $528 million worldwide.  This already makes The Jungle Book the fifth largest opening of the year, and things don’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.

One success story leads to one giant failure both critically and financially with The Huntsman: Winter’s War.  The unnecessary, unneeded, uncritical, unwarented, unessential, and clearly undesired sequel is another example of Hollywood taking a property that had a underwhelming first entry, forcing out a sequel, and completely wasting an extremely talented cast.  The cast for Huntsman is amazing, and it’s a shame to them all wasted in another terrible CGI-fest.  Huntsman brought in a lousy $20 million domestically, although it added $80 million overseas for a total $100 million. It will make its budget back, but won’t be too lucrative, which is good for all movie fans.

Babershop: The Next Cut added $10 million this weekend for a current domestic run of $36 million.  Multiple weekend box office champ Zootopia continues to rake in the cash, finishing fourth and brining its total worldwide run to just over $907 million.  I personally think the craziest story of the weekend is that Zootopia has earned more than Batman v Superman ($850 million).  I don’t think anybody saw this coming.  It goes to show that quality is still something audiences appreciate.

Next weekend it’ll be interesting to see how Key and Peele’s R-rated comedy Keanu will perform against Mother’s Day and Ratchet & Clank.  Personally I hope Keanu makes tons of cash for Warner Brothers because the R-rated comedy needs more from Key and Peele.  They could/will save the Hollywood comedy.
