Box Office Roundup: ‘Zootopia’ Breaks Free

Disney’s Zootopia set box office records taking in an estimated $73.7 million in its opening weekend at the box office.  This tops the previous March animated opening weekend, which belonged to 2012’s The Lorax with $70.2 million.  Zootopia also ranks as the ninth largest animated opening ever, a very impressive feat.  Zootopia has also been a hit with critics, as well as overseas appeal raking in a total of $232.5 million worldwide.

The sequel to Olympus Has Fallen, London Has Fallen finished its opening weekend in a distant second with $21.7 million.  The first film finished its opening weekend with $30.s million and ended up domestically grossing a total of $98.9 million.  London may have a tough time reaching the same numbers, with a much lower critical and audience score than Olympus.  Move along, nothing new to see here.

Finishing third was Deadpool, which crossed the $300 million domestic mark, and becoming the third highest grossing R-rated film of all-time behind American Sniper ($350.1 million) and Passion of the Christ ($370.7 million).  I’m glad to see Deadpool continuing to do well, and am hopeful for the future of everything R-rated in the various cinematic comic book universes.

The other wide-release of the weekend was Tina Fey’s Whiskey Tango Foxtrot which brought in an underwhelming $7.6 million, well below studio expectations.  Next weekend will see the wide-releases of 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Brothers Gimsby, neither look to pull in huge numbers.  Look for Zootopia to repeat as weekend box office champion again next weekend.
