Box Office Roundup: Nobody Cares About Divergent

Audiences don’t care.  Critics don’t care.  Sitting at 10% on Rotten Tomatoes the newest entry in the Divergent series, Allegiant finished well-below expectations with an estimated $29 million.  A tough weekend indeed.  By comparison, the first Divergent (here’s my thoughts of the initial film), opened with $54.6 million in 2014.  Maybe Allegiant can make some money overseas, but with Batman V Superman opening next weekend, things aren’t looking good for this sub-par YA franchise.  The worst news yet however, is The Divergent Series has another entry prepping for release, the final film Ascendent opens next year.

On a lighter note, Zootopia once again finished first at the box office, bringing in another $38 million, for a domestic total of just over $200 million.  Worldwide, the Disney film $591.7 million.  It looks like the small enterprise that is Disney has another hit on their hands.

Coming in at third in this weeks box office is Sony’s Miracles from Heaven.  The newest religious-based film opened with an estimated $15 million.  Right behind the miracle, finishing fourth is 10 Cloverfield Lane with a $12.5 million sophomore weekend.  Deadpool brings the top-five to a close, adding $8 million to its now domestic total of $340 million.  According to boxofficemojo.com, Deadpool is now the eighth highest grossing superhero film of all-time.  Impressive.
