Box Office Roundup: BVS Doesn’t Quite Break Records

Original Sunday box office estimates had Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice breaking Domestic and global records with $170.1 million domestic and $424.1 million worldwide.  This would have been the biggest opening for WB and the entire month of March had the numbers held up, however the real numbers are in, and they’re slightly lower than originally expected.  The original numbers had BVS beating the previous record of $169.1 million held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows-Part 2.  The new numbers however, put BVS in a close second place.  New box office reports indicate that Dawn of Justice brought in $166.1 million domestic and $420.1 million worldwide.  Still great numbers, just not record breaking numbers.

The box office results show that audiences were excited to watch these super superhero’s square off despite the terrible critical reviews that continue to pour in (currently 29% on Rotten Tomatoes).  Despite nearly making a half-a-billion dollars in its opening weekend, WB and the creative forces behind the planned DC shared universe have reason to worry.  Forbes has reported that BVS has set the superhero record for the largest Friday-to-Sunday domestic box office drop of all time.  Fridays $82 million dropped to $37 million on Sunday, a drop of 55%, in the same weekend.  Not good news.

The interesting thing for the future of the DC Cinematic Universe will be how the film holds up in the upcoming weeks.  If the numbers continue to drop, maybe some internal changes within their planned universe may begin to shake up the landscape.

In other box office news, the only other new wide-release of the weekend My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, finished third bringing in an estimated $18.1 million.  Without much competition next weekend, look for BVS and Greek Wedding to continue to finish atop the top-ten list, but hopefully for every DC movie fan, BVS’s drop isn’t too steep.
