Watch: Fans React to ‘The Phantom Menace’ in 1999

Talk about a time capsule. Star Wars : The Force Awakens is probably one of the most anticipated films of the last century. The only comparison for hype would have to be for another highly anticipated Star Wars event: The release of The Phantom Menace. Back in 1999 however, many people just didn’t want to believe what they were actually in for, even after seeing the movie. In what turned out to be one of the most disapointing films to ever be released, The Phantom Menace has only proved to be more and more terrible as time goes on. Check out the video below:

Don’t get me wrong, I have a very soft spot in my heart for this film. I first saw The Phantom Menace when in was 10 and I had the same reaction as many of the people in this video, a reaction of sheer awe and glee. It was only when I grew older that I realized what a giant piece of garbage the film was. With that said, the reactions in this video to The Phantom Menace are much more positive that one might think for a partially intelligent adult.

More than anything, this video serves as a reminder of how hype can change our perception of the quality of the film, even if the evidence of a terrible film is right in front of us. The feeling of utter ironic disappointment that this video gives is the exact reason why I have tried to keep tempered expectations for The Force Awakens. Hopefully, that film will be unlike The Phantom Menace, and surpass my expectations. The Force Awakens is due out December 18, 2015.
