The first Independence Day: Resurgence Trailer Is Here!

Independence Day Resurgence is probably one of the least likely sequels of all time to actually be made. Back when it came out, the original Independence Day was a massive, massive event at the movies. Not only was it one of the highest grossing films of the decade, but it also can be attributed to the resurgence (no pun intended) of large-budget disaster movies that we’ve seen the last 20 years. The film was a cultural and special effects milestone, and is often attributed with giving Will Smith his “Movie Star” status from that point on. It even made our “Top 5” Disaster Movies list.

So with all of that said, how come it’s taken 20 years for one of the most influential blockbusters of the 90’s to actually get a sequel made? For one, development hell. Although it took many years for the sequel to actually gain some traction, we heard rumblings a few years back that the sequel might actually be 2 parts. That half-truth was eventually debunked, but it made us think: Is Independence Day actually worthy of a sequel?

All of the “arcs”, if you want to call it that (let’s be honest with ourselves), were closed. The story was completed, the humans defeated the aliens, and all was well. No, seriously though. Think about it. There’s no reason (other than giant piles of money) why this trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence should be before us. With that said… I can’t get enough. That’s right, you heard me. I can’t wait for this movie.

Check out the trailer, as well as my reaction, below:

Scale, bombast, and cutting-edge special effects seemed to be the major things that drove mass audiences to the first film, but I don’t know if that is necessarily going to carry itself over to the sequel. Yes, the film is literally saying “bigger is better” in this trailer, but I get this seeking suspicion that it’s going to take more than the coveted Goldblum line delivery for this film to win audiences over. Yes, there’s the nostalgia angle that the marketing team has applied to this trailer with full force.

But again, I’m not sure that’s gonna carry over either. Just look at Tron: Legacy. A movie built primarily on the fact that it had a seemingly existent fan base, with a great amount of nostalgia hype surrounding it. That supposed fan base didn’t show either, or just wasn’t enough to be successful. Surely Independence Day: Resurgence will have a much easier time at the box office than Tron: Legacy, but I can’t help but thinking that the odds are stacked against a film that comes out in one of the most cramped summer movie seasons in recent Memory. Hopefully, the lack of Will Smith’s presence throughout the film will not deter audiences from seeing the mass spectacle that this film will surely provide.

Independence Day: Resurgence barges into theaters on June 24, 2016, just a few days shy of Independence Day’s 20th Anniversary.
