The songs of 007: taking a look at the best

Singer Sam Smith has confirmed that he will be the one to helm the song featured in the next James Bond 007 film, Spectre.

He photographically let the news out when posting a picture of his finger online brandishing a ring featuring the logo of the movie. Adele’s ‘Skyfall’ was a smash hit back in 2012, and there are strong expectations that Smith’s will be, too. Skyfall, the movie, ended up becoming the most financially successful movie in the franchise and broke box office records. Director Sam Mendes will be returning to helm the follow up, set to be released on October 26th in the UK and on November 6th in the USA.

It is not just the martinis, the tuxedos and sporty looking cars that make up the elements of a good Bond film. The soundtracks have become just as famous as the films themselves, and there is a reason why the opening songs have the faculties to have news  articles giving them their own spot in the limelight.

This article will take a look at some of the best 007 songs of the series’ past, in no particular order.

1. Man With the Golden Gun – sung by Lulu for the 1974 Roger Moore outing, the song conveys a strong sense of threat and urgency. Lulu’s vocals only tend to emphasise that, but the song is catchy at the same time and one that definitely has a lot of replay value.

2. Goldfinger – Shirley Bassey’s song was perfect for depicting Gert Frobe’s portrayal of villain Goldfinger. Unlike the two movies that came before it, the song’s focus was centrally placed on the film’s predominant bad guy and made no bones in telling how different this 007 entry was going to be compared to its predecessors.

3. A View to a Kill – the 1985 film was to be Roger Moore’s final go as the secret agent, but sadly it is one that many fans despise for its supposedly slow pace and tame action. Still, the song by Duran Duran is one of its high points and was befitting of the 1980’s, depicting the campness of the era.

4. The World Is Not Enough – Pierce Brosnan’s turn as James Bond may have underwhelmed a lot of viewers but at least his films had some of the series’ best songs, including this one! Garbage was chosen for this one and their choice of sound resulted in something that turned out to be remiscent of classical Bond songs but was also in keeping with the times as the 1990’s was about to turn over.

5. Goldeneye – Brosnan’s introductory role, Goldeneye was sung by pop queen, Tina Turner. Goldeneye, the movie, is often said to be a fan favourite although one disagrees here. It is probably one of the few good things about the movie, especially Turner’s epic vocals that promises that Bond will have to look over his shoulder to spot a sinister force lurking in the shadows that just may match him skill for skill and craftiness.
