‘Spectre’ Trailer 3

Spectre’s latest theatrical trailer was released yesterday, exciting fans for Sam Mendes‘ second directorial installment in the James Bond series of movies scheduled to be released on 26th October in the UK and 26th November in the US.

Two trailers have previously been released, showcasing mainly the plotline which heavily implies the association of old villain, Ernst Stavro Blofield. What is known is that a familiar face from Bond’s past will make themselves known, possibly a relation to the legendary fictional agent. Meanwhile, M fights to save the secret service from being shut down forever!

Speculation has been rife about which actor will be playing the signature bad guy but Christoph Waltz has been hotly tipped. And judging by what many saw yesterday that tip just may be the correct one!

2012’s Skyfall played a major part in setting up the direction in which the 007 universe will be heading in the future, especially its conclusion. With Judi Dench’s M being replaced by male counterpart Ralph Fiennes, a new Moneypenny and the old office set, Spectre is expected to contain a lot of the old elements from yesterday’s Bond films given the words of the director. More humour has been promised although no evidence has been shown of this as of yet. Dave Bautista’s Mr. Hinx will play Spectre’s henchman. It was briefly glimpsed that he is a brute force of nature but not in a dark way, perhaps adding to the comical element.

The new Aston Martin DB10 will  be one of the film’s main pieces along with resurrecting Blofeld. The sleek lines conceal some “explosive” special features that will assist Bond in his effort to bring down the deadly Spectre organisation. Little is still known about Monica Bellucci’s role. The same can be said for Lea Seydoux, but typically one, or all of them are possibly not all that they seem. Fiennes looks to have a sizeable role playing M, involved in his own crusade which looks likely to be an interesting subplot.

References to old Bond movies were spotted in the latest preview, including Live and Let Die, On Her Majestys Secret Service and The Man WIth The Golden Gun. But is this a tedious move? Fans will remember that 2002’s Die Another Day executed the references in too blunt a manner, devoid of any real imagination to make them smarter. Mendes tried his hand at achieving the same in 2012’s Skyfall and made it fun for fans to hunt them down. It also did not interfere with the narrative unlike in the sloppily made Die Another Day. But a third time?  One has to wonder why it is necessary. It all depends how events unfold.

But producers Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli had been pursuing Mendes ever since Skyfall’s record breaking success to direct a follow up, and there is surely a reason why other than money. The hype train will only roll faster as the month of releases approaches, but the odds that Spectre will disappoint are surely against!
