Just over a week ago, Academy Award nominated director Ruari Robinson released an ambitious “teaser” for a feature length film called The Leviathan, which you can watch here. The concept itself is stunning, and people have taken notice as the proof of concept trailer has already garnered nearly 2 million views as well as interest from Hollywood in making the film.
Now, Deadline is reporting that Producers Simon Kinberg (X-Men, Cinderella) and Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Chappie) have joined The Leviathan. Kinberg will serve as producer, while Blomkamp will serve as executive producer on the project. Kinberg was one of the many producers lined up to pitch to Robinson, but the director was “blown out of the water” by Kinberg’s pitch. The producer/writer currently has a first-look deal with Fox, which is the likely place that the film will end up. Regardless of this, there is enough buzz about the film that it shouldn’t have a hard time finding a home. Here is the synopsis of the film:
By the early 22nd century mankind had colonized many worlds. Faster than light travel was made possible by harvesting exotic matter from the eggs of the largest species mankind has ever seen. Those that take part in the hunt are mostly involuntary labor.
Despite Blomkamp’s disappointing last two outings as a director, the man is a great sci-fi world builder, and Kinberg obviously has the resources and pull to make The Leviathan happen sooner rather than later. We will have to wait while screenwriter Jim Uhls (Fight Club) pens the script, but make sure to check back in the future as we learn more about the project.
In the meantime, here is the short that everyone is talking about:
