Irish filmmaker Ruairí Robinson, who would probably be best known for his short film work, as well as being attached to direct the live action Akira adaptation at one point. A few days ago, the director dropped a new proof-of-concept trailer for a feature length film simply called The Leviathan. The sci-fi concept, which was created in collaboration with screenwriter Jim Uhls (Fight Club, Jumper), is breathtaking to say the least. Robinson also provided some concept art for The Leviathan via his twitter, and it really shows the scale of the monster.

The plot synopsis reads as such:

By the early 22nd century mankind had colonized many worlds. Faster than light travel was made possible by harvesting exotic matter from the eggs of the largest species mankind has ever seen. Those that take part in the hunt are mostly involuntary labor.

Robinson, who took inspiration from properties such as Dune and Moby Dick, seems to have a pretty good grasp on scale here. It’s the characters and the world that I am both curious and concerned about. While the trailer does a lot to set up this great premise for a story, it also has 0 character whatsoever. That’s not to say that Robinson and Uhls won’t be able to craft great characters and a compelling world, it’s just that they didn’t do that here, so it’s more of an unknown.

Do you think that someone should finance The Leviathan? What are your thoughts on the concept?
