Cinema’s Top 5 Unluckiest Characters

Here is a list of what I consider to be Cinema’s Top 5 Unluckiest Characters throughout history that have managed to constantly find them selves in the the most unlikely of circumstances. Time and time again, these characters land themselves in impossible situations yet somehow manage to keep on keepin’ on.

This article contains SPOILERS:

1. Bryan Mills

Liam Neeson’s famous modern action franchise gave birth to this character. Taken became an unexpected hit paving the way for more unfortunate events for Mills. He, himself, was to be kidnapped in the first sequel along with his ex-wife only to then completely lose her when she is murdered in the third installment. And who do the police think did it? Yep, you guessed it. Although financially declining, expect a Taken 4 in the not too distant future.

2. Paul Kersey

If you thought Bryan Mills had it bad then you probably have never had the fortune to see any of the Death Wish movies. Starring Charles Bronson as Paul Kersey, a family man whose wife is murdered and turns vigilante in the streets of New York to find who did it. Although he got vengeance, there were four more movies. And Kersey manages to lose somebody close to him, usually a partner, in almost every one of them! Death Wish V was to be the last in the series, and if it were real surely Paul Kersey would have given up hope and lived high in the secluded mountains somewhere away from civilization. Or maybe he stayed and got himself another girlfriend and…well, you can guess the rest.

3. Vinny Gambini

Gambini was played by Joe Pesci in the 1992 smash hit comedy, My Cousin Vinny about an inexperienced lawyer who has to defend his cousin who is on a murder charge. Currently then residing in Alabama, Vinny and his girlfriend Lisa are not accustomed to life down South. Other problems that pile on top of the main reason for Vinny’s stay include trains and loud pigs hillariously interrupting their sleep, a guy who wants to fight him for $200, a restaurant whose menu do not feature the specifics, massive mud problems among other things.

4. Sidney Prescott

Neve Campbell was busy doing soap operas until she was given the opportunity to star in a horror movie that was to spawn three sequels and become one of the best known horror franchises of the 1990’s. Wes Craven’s Scream about a girl, Sidney played by Campbell, who is stalked by a guy wearing a ghost mask features many references from fan favourite horror films including Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street. By the time the third movie was made you couldn’t help but feel for the poor woman who had lost just about all her friends, her partners and her mother. Things got worse for Sidney when even her own family eventually tried to kill her! Its a wonder that the script writers have not placed her in a mental hospital yet or killed her off by suicide.

5. James Bond

We all know the suave secret agent has a licence to kill so he should expect to face his share of people who would not exactly send him a Christmas card. But would a secret agent working for Her Majestys government in London, England become mixed up in assignments that would hold some personal connection to him? I doubt it. And James Bond has had a few personal ones! Let’s see now. Throughout the characters 50 year movie reign Bond has had a wife murdered at the hands of one of his main foes, a friend almost killed by a drug lord, a 00 colleague who turned against him, his boss was killed after trying to protect her, he fell in love with a woman who turned out to be an arch enemy etc. Bond has certainly had a career that is a little different than one would expect for an agent whose occupation is basically global security.

Let us know who you consider to be some of cinemas unluckiest characters of all time. We always need to write another list!

About Age of the Nerd

Age of the nerd was created for the same reason most entertainment sites were started. A group of disgruntled journalists got together and decided our opinion was more valuable… In a day when it’s easier to get a position as a freelance writer or just create your own job, a small group of us got together and asked the obvious question: why not us? So after a heated discussion on ideas, focus and long-term goals, we decided to just go for it. What’s the worst that can happen?
