‘Straight Outta Compton’ Red Band Trailer

N.W.A. sits high on the list of all-time most influential hip-hop groups, period.  Their influence reached the entire globe, and continues to influence the rap game.  While there have been plenty of documentaries on the group, this is the first time their story will be translated onto the big screen.  The biographical drama will be directed by F. Gary Gray, who not only has experience working with many of films subjects, but has directed music videos from Dr. Dre to Tupac.  He seems like the best choice as director, to say the least.

The cast consists of mostly unknown actors, as far as the core group is concerned.  Jason Michell stars as Eazy-E, Corey Hawkins as Dr. Dre, O’Shea Jackson Jr. as Ice Cube, Aldis Hodge as MC Ren, Neil Brown, Jr. as DJ Yella, and Marlon Yates Jr. as The D.O.C.  Paul Giamatti is by far the most well-known actor in the film, and will portray N.W.A.’s controversial manager Jerry Heller.

Here’s the first official Red Band trailer, with an introduction from Cube and Dre.

Here’s the official synopsis:

In the mid-1980s, the streets of Compton, California, were some of the most dangerous in the country.  When five young men translated their experiences growing up into brutally honest music that rebelled against abusive authority, they gave an explosive voice to a silenced generation.  Following the meteoric rise and fall of N.W.A., STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON tells the astonishing story of how these youngsters revolutionized music and pop culture forever the moment they told the world the truth about life in the hood and ignited a cultural war.

Starring O’Shea Jackson Jr., Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell as Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E, STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON is directed by F. Gary Gray (FridaySet It OffThe Italian Job).  The drama is produced by original N.W.A. members Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, who are joined by fellow producers Matt Alvarez and Tomica Woods-Wright.  Will Packer serves as executive producer of the film alongside Gray.

What do you guys think?  Will this biopic be better than some of the last few we’ve received?  Hopefully it’s better than 2009’s Notorious.  Straight Outta Compton is scheduled to hit theaters August 15, 2015.
