Transformers: Age of Extinction topped the box office in its second week, earning an estimated $36.4 million. Audiences stayed away from the theaters this Fourth of July weekend as the weekend numbers are comparably low to previous years ( about 47 percent behind last year, when Despicable Me 2, The Long Ranger and The Heat delivered a $223 million weekend.), and instead chose to celebrate America in other ways. You can’t really blame audiences however, none of the films out are huge draws for your average consumer. Things at the box office will heat up again soon.

Melissa McCarthy’s Tammy earned $21 million ($32.9 million over the five day weekend), which is not bad for a movie that cost only $20 million to make. Although the numbers are solid, it’s not as high as McCarthy’s The Heat ($39 million) and Identity Thief ($34 million). With terrible reviews, McCarthy has shown she is a huge box office star and can draw audiences to a movie despite the critics.

Scott Derrickson’s (who’s directing the upcoming Dr. Strange for Marvel) new film Deliver Us From Evil came in third, bringing in a disappointing $9.5 million and $15 million over the five days.

22 Jump Street earned another $9.4 million, bringing its total to an impressive $158.9 million. And once again, How to Train Your Dragon 2 finished right behind Jump Street with $8.8 million and $140 million overall.
