‘Apes’ Dominates Box Office Competition

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opened with amazing reviews, currently holding 91 % on Rotten Tomatoes, and has opened number one with an estimated $73 million.  Opening on more than 3,967 screens, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes crushed the weekend’s competition, and improved upon 2011’s Rise of the Planet of Ape‘s 2011 $53 million opening weekend.  While the numbers are strong, they don’t come close to the numbers seen by Transformers 4X-Men, and Spiderman, Dawn may have more legs in the upcoming weeks (or at least until Guardians opens August 1).

Coming in at a distant second, Transformers: Age of Extinction finished with $16.5 million.  To date, the movie has made $209 million domestically.  Worldwide, the film has become the highest grossing movie of the year with $753 million, proving that it’s easily digestible.

In it’s second week of release, the Melissa McCarthy film Tammy finished third with $12.9 million and has so-far grossed $57.4 million.

boyhood_1-620x435Richard Linklater’s Boyhood opened on five-screens, and had a solid $71,000 per-theater average.  Look for the film to expand in the coming weeks.
