‘Age of Extinction’ Has Biggest Opening Weekend of 2014

Transformers: Age of Extinction had the biggest opening weekend of 2014, bringing in $100 million.  Age of Extinction has bumped Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95 million) from the top debut of the year, and has been doing well overseas as well.  This most likely means that Bay will return for the fifth installment, and fans will get more of the same.

For comparison, 2007’s Transformers opened with $70.5 ($709.7 million total), 2009’s Revenge of the Fallen opened with $108.9 ($836.3), 2011’s Moon had a $97 million debut, and eventually crossed the billion dollar mark with $1.12 billion.

In second this weekend, 22 Jump Street earned $15.4 million, and passing the original’s $138 million with a current total of $139.8 million.

As it’s been since they released on the same weekend, How to Train Your Dragon 2 finished closely behind Jump Street with $13 million (121.8 total so far).  Think Like A Man Too made $10.4 million and $48.1 million domestically.

Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent crossed the $200 million mark, with a domestic total of $201.8 million, and plenty more overseas money to make this Disney reimagining extremely profitable.

In sevemth, Edge of Tomorrow which had generally positive reviews and viewer feedback, has struggled mightily, and has only earned $84.1 million.
