Rumor: Alfonso Cuarón to Direct ‘Shinning’ Prequel ‘Overlook Hotel’

alfonso_cuaronSince the release and subsequent accolades following the success of Gravity, director Alfonso Cuarón is on the top of the film game.  He has an opportunity few directors ever get, complete control over pretty much any film he wants to make his next directoral effort.  The past week’s rumor circuit had Cuarón potentially directing the Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them.  Now comes word via Schmoes Know (which have broke some recent news stories that had previously only been rumors) that Alfonso Cuarón’s next project may if fact be a prequel to Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror classic The Shining called Overlook Hotel.

At this point, these are both just rumors, but the latter sounds much more interesting.  Cuarón has already visited the world of Potter with 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, so I’m hoping he choses something new to take on.  The chance to direct a prequel to a Stanley Kubrick movie sounds like it could be enticing for a director who has proven to be one of the best in world.  No plot details have been released on Overlook Hotel, but the possibilities are endless.

Stay tuned to see how the rumors play out, and if your interested in watching a great documentary, check out Room 237 on Netflix.  The documentary explores many theories on the Shining.  Covering everything from Stanley Kubrick’s subliminal messages admitting the faking of the moon landings to the superimposition playing the film both forward and backward, and the implications that follow.
